Act 1 Upon acquiring a ship, pirates would strip out any equipment, cabins, compartments, bulkheads, etc. that didn't serve the purpose of sailing fast and carrying lots of loot.
Pirates liked to use shallow-draft ships in shallow coastal waters that large, heavy, deep-draft naval vessels couldn't pursue.
Pirates would add as many guns as were practical to their ships.
