I-wall construction requires steel sheet pilings twenty-eight feet long to be driven into the earthen levees, which are made up of layers of sand, peat, and clay. The pilings are a water barrier and they anchor a concrete floodwall which is six feet high.

T-wall construction involves sheet pilings up to seventy-five feet long and at multiple angles. The floodwall has a wide base, like an inverted "T".
